Fun facts about Game Shows:

  • Game shows first appeared on both TV and the radio in 1938; Spelling Bee — a 15-minute game show from the UK — was the first television game show while Information Please—a quiz show broadcast on NBC—was the first radio game show.
  • Panel game shows on TV were the most popular type of game show in the 1960s—a group of celebrities would be asked questions or they would ask questions to competitors. Though dropped in the late 1960’s, they did make a comeback and remain popular to this day. Popular examples of this game show genre include To Tell the Truth, Hollywood Squares, Password, What’s My Line? and I’ve Got A Secret.
  • In the 1980’s, game shows were a low priority for the major networks and, as fewer hits were being produced, only The Price is Right remained in the daytime lineup in the mid-1990’s. However, fortunes were ultimately reversed with the release of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? and, in the years ahead, with primetime revivals of classic game shows including To Tell The Truth, Match Game, and Password.
  • The Price is Right, which debuted in the US in 1956, is considered by many to be the most popular and most adopted show in the entire world. By some estimates, the game show is broadcast in over 50 countries. In fact, across its long and illustrious history, there have only been three hosts: Bill Cullen was the original host, followed by Bob Barker in 1972 after the show was revamped and, since 2007, it has been hosted by comedian Drew Carey.
  • Family Feud is actually a spin-off of Match Game and has been canceled numerous times, but found its footing with Steve Harvey as its host.
